外国語は､誰でも話せるようになれますか？
基本的には、誰でも話せるようになると考えています。しかし、条件があります。(1)話せるようになりたいという動機が強いこと。(2)学習方法が正しいこと。『聞く･話す』の回路は『読む・書く』回路と違います。『音』を中心とした学習を、従来の文法学習と組み合わせなくてはなりません。(3)十分時間をかける覚悟ができていること。ある言語学者は、基礎的な会話ができるようになる（つまり聞く･話すの基礎ができる）まで1,000時間、マスターするまで2,000時間という学習時間を出していますが、これは、赤ん坊が約１年かけて話すようになるまでの時間数に応じています。『千里の道も一歩から』と言えば、スピードがかなめの現代人には魅力的ではありませんが、最新の教材や学習法を活用することにより、より楽しく、効果的な学習が期待できます。(4)新しい世界観を身につける、心理的な準備ができていること。｢言葉は世界観｣です。日本語と英語は語族的､文化的にとてもかけ離れているので、心理的・社会的なギャップも考慮しないといけません。One Worldでは、異文化理解にも力を入れています。英語を解せることは、新しい世界観を習得することでもあるからです。
Can anyone become able to speak a foreign language?
Our answer is essentially
“yes.” But there are conditions to be
met: (1) One must be highly motivated, that is, she/he must really want to
learn the target language. (2) Learning/teaching
methods must be the right ones. For
Japanese students of English, the main challenge is to master listening and
speaking skills. Because the
listening-speaking circuit is different from the reading-writing circuit of the
brain, students need to train both areas equally hard. Also, the former circuit must be built first
as the foundation to build the latter circuit.
(3) One must be ready and willing to spend ample time on learning the
language. Some linguists cite 1,000
learning hours to master the basic listening-speaking skills of a language and
additional 1,000 hours for mastering reading and writing skills. Although this may be a very rough estimate,
it is based on the amount of time a baby spends (as contact hours) before
starting to speak and therefore has some deep implications to formal learners
of English. If one spends one hour a day
studying it, it would take about 6
years; if one spends 3 hours a day, it would take about 2 years; if one hour a
week, it would take 40 years! (if she/he were willing to spend that much time!).
(4) One must be willing to take mental, psychological and spiritual adventures,
because learning a language is learning a new worldview. One World, for this reason, emphasizes
cross-cultural understanding while providing language lessons.
レッスンは必ず、英語を母国語とする 講師から受けるべきですか？
とは限りません。あくまで、学習者のレベルとニーズに合わせるべきです。One Worldでは、幼児クラスと子供クラスは、基本的にネイテイブ講師が担当しています。英語の音と雰囲気に慣れさせるためです。しかし、中学･高校英語コースでは､日本人講師と外国人講師が両方、ニーズに応じて担当しています。学校英語の対策は、やはり、日本語と英語､両方わかる講師が能率的です。社会人の場合は、学習者のニーズによりまちまちです。日本語による解説が必要なレッスンは、日本人が担当しています。英語での解説を受けながらレッスンを受けられる学習者は、外国人講師が担当します。翻訳通訳者養成コースは、日本人講師が担当しています。
Should language lessons be taught only by native speaking
instructors?
We do not necessarily think
so. It depends on the level and needs of
each student. At One World, pre-school
and other small children’s classes are
usually taught by native English speakers so that students become used to the
English sound system and an English-speaking atmosphere. Junior high and senior high classes are
taught by either Japanese or English-speaking teachers. In this case, knowledge of both Japanese and
English, the Japanese educational system and that of North America would be
very useful. Adult classes are also
taught either Japanese or English-speaking teachers, depending whether students
require explanations in Japanese, whether they are ready to be immersed in
English only and other conditions. Our
translation/interpretation courses are taught by the Japanese instructor.
